Welcome to the Operations, IT and Value Creation Study! The purpose of this project is to examine how operational improvement initiatives and leverage of information technology (IT) affect value creation in the portfolio companies of Private Equity (PE) firms.

 

Our objectives are to:

 

  • Provide one of the richest academic databases exploring value creation practices in India-based PE firms.

 

  • Advance our knowledge about which types of operations improvement initiatives and IT practices are most beneficial to value creation.

 

  • Determine which Operational methods and IT choices may enhance the ability of manufacturing and services organizations to meet the needs of existing as well as new customers through sustainable value creation and hence achieve superior business performance.

Why should we participate?

We suggest several reasons for you to participate:

  • Your company may benefit from the study findings and insights gained through this research by understanding which operational methods and IT practices may enhance your ability to create in your portfolio companies.

 

  • Results of this study will assist portfolio companies in your focal industry to determine which Operations and IT investments and practices drive superior business performance and thus enable value creation.

 

  • Your participation will advance valuable academic research on the identification of best practices regarding operations improvement initiatives and information technology practices which will contribute towards the growth of the portfolio companies in the emerging Indian economy.

What is required for participation?

Participation requires one key manager to complete a 15-20 minute questionnaire focused on your company’s operational improvement, IT and value creation practices.  The questionnaire will gather information on your portfolio’s business performance (relative to its competition), IT practices, operational improvement initiatives and value creation mechanisms from the top ranking executive responsible for strategy formulation (Chief Executive Officer or equivalent).

 

If we participate, how will our data be used?

This project is an academic research study designed to further our understanding of the value creation levers prominent in the industry. Your responses will be used in aggregate form to better understand these connections.

We are sensitive to confidentiality & privacy concerns. Data collected from individual companies shall be kept strictly private and confidential by taking following three steps.

  • First, companies will be assigned identifying numbers and the information connecting companies and numbers will be securely stored in a separate location within a password protected file.

 

  • Second, the names of companies and designation of key respondents will be replaced within the database with assigned numerical identifiers that are indecipherable without the code file.

 

  • Third, we will only report aggregate results in this study and no facts that identify your company will appear when we present or publish this research in academic conferences or journals.

When will the study take place?

The current study runs from April 15, 2015 through May 20, 2015.  Our study team began contacting companies in April 2015 and we anticipate having reports ready for distribution by May 31, 2015.

 

Who is conducting this study?

This study is being conducted by a team of researchers – Doctors Terence Saldanha, Jiban Khuntia and Abhishek Kathuria , from Washington State University, USA, University of Colorado Denver, USA and The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong respectively. Other scholars associated with this study are Dr. Mariana G. Andrade Rojas (soon joining IE Business School, Spain) and Dr. Benn Konsynski of Emory University, USA.
